Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is an FDA-approved antimicrobial liquid, used to control beginning and active decay. While the ideal method to treat teeth with decay is to remove the caries and place a restoration, this non-invasive alternative treatment may slow the progression of decay.

Benefits to SDF include:

  • Non-invasive
  • Painless
  • Quick treatment time
  • Slows the progression of decay
  • Relieves tooth sensitivity

Risks to SDF include:

  • Any decay or decalcified areas will stain black
  • If SDF touches skin or gum tissue, a harmless temporary brown stain will appear in the area for 1-3weeks
  • SDF does not restore tooth function or esthetics, so large holes will trap food
  • SDF cannot be used in the presence of infection or decay into the nerve
